Nivea Lip Butters (Review)

I will admit it, I have a lip product problem. I have the hardest time walking past a new lip balm or lip gloss without wanting to buy it. I am on a continual search for the perfect red, nude, and peach/pink shades. If you don’t want to take my word for it, below are the lip products that are in my in my purse right now.

Nivea Lip Butters #1

So, yes, I love lip products. But my real babies are my lip balms. I love them. I keep them everywhere. In my car, in all my purses, in my coats, in my gym bag, in my makeup bag, in my backpack, on my night stand, etc.. And usually more than one in case I’m in the mood for a particular scent or, god forbid, one gets lost. It’s gotten to the point where I feel a little naked if I don’t have any lip balm on me.

Ahem. So whenever I see a new lip balm or butter (or scrub or gloss or stick), I will stop and take a look. And although my go-to lip balms are Chapstick (preferably the strawberry or fruit punch flavors) for day and cherry Carmex for night, I can’t help but wonder if there is something better out there.  Anyway, so cut to a few weeks ago, Mar and I were at Walgreens and we saw these little guys and boy were we tempted. But we both resisted. And I did well to resist them until last week when I was at Rite Aid and they were staring at me from an end cap, and I finally gave in and bought these two guys.  Nivea Lip Butters in Raspberry Rose Kiss and Vanilla & Macadamia Kiss

Nivea Lip Butters #2

So, what do I think?

The good:

-In terms of moisture, these guys are great. I put the raspberry rose one on my lips a few hours ago and I can still feel it.  But they’ve got petrolatum, Shea butter, castor seed oil, and sweet almond oil, so I’m not surprised about that. I know a lot of people aren’t a fan of petroleum jelly, but to be honest, it keeps my lips well moisturized so I don’t mind it.

-I LOVE the smell of the raspberry rose. It’s sweet but not too sweet, floral but not too floral. It reminds me of something from my childhood, I just can’t remember what.

-They have no color and no shimmer. When you apply lip balms as constantly as I do, having to look in a mirror to apply them is just annoying.

The meh:

-I wish they had at least a little SPF. It’s not mandatory for me, but it is nice.

-The packaging. These little tins are always kind of hard for me to get open, especially if I have any sort of lotion on my hands. Also, I don’t like having to put wash my hands before I put my lip products on, it’s just one extra step that I’m not always willing to take.

-For $2.99 they’re a little bit more than I usually spend on lip balms. I love lip balms way too easily to want to spend too much on them.

The bad:

-I’m not a huge fan of the smell of the Vanilla and & Macadamia Kiss scent. I was hoping it would be more macadamia and less vanilla but too me it’s mostly just overly sweet vanilla with just a hint of macadamia. Don’t get me wrong, I like the smell of vanilla, but I’m super picky about it.

The bottom line:

They’re good lip balms and if you like rose/raspberry scent I’d definitely try the Raspberry Rose one.  Holy Grail? No. But nice alternatives.
